Slips in the 140 with full flaps does not blank the tail surfaces like the 172 does. I have slipped 172's with full flaps and felt the blanking, it's manageable but they say don't do it. I have done cross controlled slow flight and stalls in the 140 with full flaps and perhaps have felt some burble on the tail but like John C mentioned, full slip landings with flaps are pretty standard for some of us. The slip is more effective than the flaps anyway.
Raymond, tell your instructor there are other big, fat runways in the area without ice and snow. Finding grass may be about 6 months away!
Yea, we are making alternate plans- going to check out the grass at home on Monday, the rain should kill the snow and it’s pretty sandy area so doesn’t get real soggy or there is a pretty flat area next to the east west runway we could use he said... so hoping Monday the training begins... very anxious!
Another 140 friend said if pavements all we got just do a few take offs first let him land to gauge how good my footwork is before trying landing on the pavement...
I’m hoping it’s not overconfidence but I have always thought I was pretty good on the pedals, so hoping this isn’t a daunting challenge to learn...
I learned to land tailwheel on pavement and have never landed on grass. Dirt yes, but not many grass strips in Arizona. It’s not a big deal, just keeps the instructor in his or her toes at first.

Hey, Mike -- is the "Horny Toad" still operating in Carefree? I recall eating the largest strawberry shortcake I've ever seen there a "few" years back. You're living and flying in a beautiful part of the US! Mac
Horny Toad is still here. Along with a slew of new biker bars. Cave Creek is the perfect distance for folks to ride up for an afternoon beer and lunch. It is nice here, particularly this time of year! July, not so much...

Thanks for the update...great memories of travel there. Also recall good food at the Zulu Cafe over @ Scottsdale airport...wow...seems all I've ever done is fly around the country, and eat! (It's a "dry heat" in July...right? )

...a flight review several years back, on final for landing...instructor was fidgeting and asked "aren't you going to use flaps?!?". I replied "it's up to you -- they're just on the 140 for practice in case you ever happen to fly a plane that actually has 'real' flaps".
They actually do make a difference in my 140A. I was surprised, because my previous 140 experience led me to believe that they were "for show". We then got in to a discussion here at my home airport and we measured them and found that the 140A flaps are 2 inches greater in chord! As Gomer Pyle would say - "surprise, surprise!"
More important than the extra 2 inches of chord on the 140A is its fowler flaps as opposed to the simple hinged flaps on the straight 140. Fowler flaps are real flaps.

Do you know that the seat back has 3 positions, both top and bottom? I'm 5'8 also, and we're both giants by 1946 standards. Anyhow, I don't have any problem sitting close enough.
Got it moved up! Thank you, can't beleive I didn't notice the plate with multiple holes in it. It was at its furthest back setting, I know have it full forward and that puts me right to that "slightly awkwardly close" spot that I like to be. Going out at 1300 today to give it a shot! Just have to go hit a small snow berm from plowing the paved runway with a shovel first where they cross... I'll let you all know how it goes... Wind is 8-10 but straight down the turf
