2023 Decorah Iowa Convention

We had a great time this year at convention, with a couple unexpected events, I think things went well. The town was large enough to have anything one would need , including a great airport, a really neat restored hotel , great food, local attractions, and several breweries. Cindy and I packed our bikes ( we drove) and biked the 11 mile loop around town.
We had to change flying events scheduling for early fog but we fit everything in that was posted. Flying included a poker run I think all were excited to find a winner. Lorraine Morris had 2 Kings and a wild card , but more exciting was we forgot Victor was out judging planes and he was a close 2nd with 2 pair all was good and fun.
Our flying contest results shortest take off, BOMB drop,and spot landing went well with 8 planes signed up. Winds were light from the south and the winners were; Short T.O. David Smith, BOMB Tom Fitzgerald, Spot Ken Morris. Other awards; Matt Rybarczyk Best Org. 120 , Best Mod 120 Scott Ross ,Org. 140 Vince Jackovich , Best Mod. 140 Mike Pastore , best Org. 140A Ken Morris , Peoples Choice Vince Jackovich Farthest Flown Bob Burnet from Florida. Crazy thing Reddoch Williams hanger is same airport but addresses beat the tie.
Cindy and I traveled to Effigy Mounds 1/2 hr drive and hiked to see a great view of the Mississippi river. Then we went to Spillville to see a remarkable collection of clocks the "Bily Bros Clock Museum". The town has a population of 372 and one of the most amazing display of clocks hand carved by two brothers from Czechoslovakia. Look it up, well worth the visit. Just one of those landmarks you would never find unless you go to a convention in Decorah Ia.
WE had a group tour through the Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. with dinner at there restaurant on site. ( Beer was top notch including a sample of 14.2 % ) Our early arrival dinner we invaded a small Mexican restaurant I think we overwhelmed them but they did a great job and our dinner was awesome. ( Margaritas TOO ) Another group dinner was Mabe's Pizza we had a basement banquet room just for us, Pizza was a thumb's up and plenty ! (More Beer TOO)
Cindy and I had a great time, we meet our sometimes once a year Cessna family members we missed the ones that could not be there , and we met new members hoping they were as welcome as us at our first 2008 convention.
