Hello folks!
Was wondering if someone had the link to an old tail spring file that was on the forum. I noticed ot plane that the prior owner put the second to last spring UNDER the longest spring where the tail wheel attaches to. I have no idea what or why. I want to at least replace the longest spring. I think I read they went from AN-5 to AN-6 bolt for strength and so on.
Any help would be appreciated!!
Randy

Re: Tail spring
That's definitely not correct. The tail spring article is in fact posted to the forum.

Re: Tail spring
Thanks for the article. A lot of great information in there. I’ve caught bits and pieces of it over the years but nothing that has had all the goods in one document.
Just curious of others opinion. I haven’t disassembled the springs yet. I originally decided to replace the main spring only. Just wondering if I should just bite the bullet and do the whole stack? Not sure what I’ll find when I take apart the stack.

Re: Tail spring
I am in the process of replacing all of the leaf springs on my 140A. In addition, I replaced the clevis screws in the elevator bellcrank (old ones were too long and the IA did not like how close they nuts were to the airframe). So, this entailed removing the rudder. You get to see all sorts of stuff during your first annual! Since I am replacing the leaf springs, I replaced a few of the brackets in the spring set. Turns out, that by the time you buy the leaf spring set from Univar you might as well buy a few extra pieces, since they ship for free for >$300 purchase. I found some bent pieces and worn rubber, so am replacing them. The article previously mentioned is an excellent read before you get too involved.

Re: Tail spring
Larry,
You’re probably right about doing the whole stack. I was planning on going with the 3/8 inch bolt and new neoprene cushions. I’m sure these springs are older than I am. Rather be safe than sorry for another $180. Free shipping does help!
