From my earlier post:

Another item, is the forward steering chain attachment to the rudder horn. I see that eye bolt attach method regularly, unfortunately that brings the steering chain in at the wrong angle. (and tends to bend the rudder horn). The proper install is a small stamped "S" bracket that comes off the back of the rudder horn and keeps the steering chain a bit higher and closer to the center of the rudder horn.

John C. did point out that this installation with the "eye" bolts is specifically called out in the Scott manuals and drawings. So I stand corrected in that "technically" this is an approved installation. It just seems over time that it tends to bend the rudder horn faster than the original installation. Coupled with "exhuberant" hard rudder usage while steering on the ground.

I think it is important that the nuts on the eye bolts be tightened to the point where any further tightening would cause the rudder cable fittings to bind on the rudder horn. This limits the amount of twisting force the rudder cable can apply to the horn, and minimizes the lever arm of the tail wheel chains.

OK so I have the eyelets and hooked the chains up that way, but should I be looking for some S-hooks instead?

Where would you use the "S" hooks? Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but, you don't want anything open.

To quote V529 from earlier in this thread:

"Another item, is the forward steering chain attachment to the rudder horn. I see that eye bolt attach method regularly, unfortunately that brings the steering chain in at the wrong angle. What is he talking about?

Thanks

For reference, look at the rudder horn listed on the Univair web. catalog!

And I don't See a "S" bracket attached to the rudder horn!

But only a Steel offset bracket that the spring / chain attaches too!

Maybe that's what he meant. That's the only other way besides the eye bolts that I'm aware of. Mine has been both ways. It has eye bolts now because "that's the way it's supposed to be".

I will stay with the eye bolts. I think the springs were hooked directly through some smaller holes in the horn when I took them off, but they seem to be worrying their way through the edge of the horn enough to give me pause.

The tabs riveted to the bottom of the horn are steel, and are to prevent just that. The original tailwheel was the Scott 3-24B; the springs were lighter than the 3200, and attached to the steel tabs.
