Sent you a PM. Also, be sure the eye-bolt is (just) loose enough to allow it to turn freely.

When I bought my 140 last year it had the Maule-style compression springs installed that have bent up the steering arm on my 3200. I've replaced the springs and chains and am in the process of rebuilding the tailwheel with a new steering arm. The Scott installation instructions show the AN42-6 eye bolt but don't specify a length. I'm putting together a hardware order, is this the correct one? https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... ckkey=5058

What length should I get?

Thanks!

I would get the ones with the 1/4" grip. You need to go through both sides of the rudder cable fitting and the thickness of the bell crank. You don't want them bearing on the threaded section.

Stephen,
I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I have a question for John about the Scott 3200 installation.

John, I just bought a new rudder bell crank with the spring tabs. I have the Scott 3200 tail wheel. The springs were attached to the old spring tabs. The 140A TCDS says to install the Scott in accordance with the Scott Bulletin No. I-168, which says to use the eye bolts. This tells me I have to use the eye bolts, even tho I have perfect spring tabs. Also, the Scott Bulletin says to submit a 337 for the installation. If it's in the TCDS I don't have to file the 337.

Am I correct on both of these? I would rather attach the spring to the new tabs and when they get worn go to the eye bolt in the rudder cable attachment hole. I have a great IA but he's not a 120/140/170 guru.

Thanks.

Steve, I don't have the eye-bolts on mine either, but without them there is not enough clearance on my plane between the springs and the horn. The compressed springs will actually rub. The eye-bolts go outboard and below the clips and will solve my clearance issue. YMMV. Can't speak to the 337 question. Probably falls under that 'alteration' category that the FAA makes vague on purpose.

Correct: no 337 if it's on the type certificate.

As far as the tabs go, I agree; the correct springs will likely rub on the bell crank if you use the tabs. For that reason, I'd go with the eye bolts. On the other hand, I can't see your plane from here, so I have no comment on what you've done... ;)

I've seen springs on the other end of the chains. Even with that arrangement, for correct geometry, the eyebolts should NOT go on the tabs.

Since the TCDS says "in accordance with" the Scott bulletin, I'll use the eye bolts. It's just a shame not to use those purdy new shiney tabs! I'm buying new springs and chains and get to rebuild the tail wheel. I'm replacing the rudder bell crank due to worn out holes.

Ray, we all will agree, it wouldn't work to put the eye bolts on the tabs!

Thanks for the input.

Stephen, you can have your thread back now!
