Thingy on top of Turn and Bank

In the pic below, there is a disc screwed into the rear of the T and B (Vacuum) What is the disc for?

God that thing looks as old as the WWII instruments that were in mine.
My guess is that it’s a valve so that you can change the amount of airflow through the instrument. But that’s a guess.
I’ve never worked in a Vacuum T&B, does it only have one hose that goes to it? If so then could the disk hold an air filter?

I found this image online from a 1940's manual. Looks like the "thingy" could be a filter.

Yup!
Take the staples out and change the paper with bits cut from a coffee filter.
