Control Y install

Post by hwdaviscfi »

I am in the process of restoring a 46’ 140 and I want to make a few modifications to mine. Has anyone installed a control Y in place of a T to do a center stack of radios? I am doing a new panel piece so I can cut all new holes and the control Y will drop the yokes in the panel 2” and I will put the yokes out of a 47’ in turned upside down.

Thanks for any input.

I recall it has been done. I don't remember where I saw it, though. Should you decide to do it, I happen to have the part...

Thanks for the reply. I currently have both control Y’s. I have tried calling the local FSDO with no response back yet about doing a field approval. Trying to get ahead of it, but I am still currently disassembling wings and control surfaces to clean and prep everything with alumiprep-alodine-zinc primer inside and out.

Explain to them how it's functionally identical,it bolts on, and it enhances safety.

I had a friend that did this mod to his 140A. This was in the 70’s when it was easier to do mods.

N20JR, a 1949 140A has the “Y” installed. Also uses a Cessna 150A or B instrument panel in order to use center stack radio. FAA records indicated that George Cox in Memphis, TN owns the aircraft.

This may very well be the plane. The mods were made at American Flyers in Oklahoma. They were a large flight school that operated 140s and 150s.
