Stem removal from fuel selector

I don't want to revive the old thread as I have read them and Neal Wright's article but found nothing on removing the stem. I have removed the handle, cap, packing, spring, and detent washer. I felt the stem should just lift out, but it doesn't. It is stuck. Any suggestions on what I'm missing or how to approach this will be appreciated. Photo below. Thanks, Dave Skiles

There really isn't anything holding it back, other than perhaps fuel varnish or old lubricant? If it still turns I guess try a little penetrating oil or Seafoam or some such solvent in small amounts to break down the crud holding it in?

It is a tapered plug. There is nothing holding it in but tapered fits can be hard to break free. That said, if you can turn it you should be able to pull it out.
