Tire Ply Question

Hello,

Does anyone know of a problem with 800 x 6 x 6 ply tires on their 140? I currently have 600 x 6 x 6 and want to put 800s on. Everyone is out of stock for 4 ply but they do have 6 ply. The specs indicate using 4 ply on 800 and 600. Since I am able to find 800 x 6 x 6 ply I am thinking of getting those instead. Thanks.

I think the only issue would be extra weight.

Yes, just extra weight. The plies are for load carrying capability. Just so everyone knows, getting "materials" (i.e. parts) is becoming a real issue, tires, raw stock of sheet metal, stainless hardware etc and so on. If there's something out there you want..........order it now.........cuz you may be waiting for a while. At work (WACO) we are seeing some hellacious lead times. All due to Covid and all the various breakdowns in supply chain.

Thank you. I ordered 800-6-4ply back in May but they never came and now are out of stock. Maybe if I try for a 6 ply I may have better luck. Thank you for the replies.

Actually, Aircraft Specification A-768 is the ruling document. It lists the 8.00-6 4 ply tires. I'd call going to 6 ply a minor modification.

Brake assembly ...
(1) with 6.00-6 4 ply rating tires & tubes 34 lbs.
(2) with 7.00-6 4 ply rating tires & tubes 36 lbs.
(3) with 8.00-6 4 ply rating tires & tubes 44 lbs.

Besides being heavier, 6 ply tires are stiffer, too. Maybe they would be "run flat" on a 140!

One other thought.............. I've run the 7:00 X 6 tires on my airplane for 40 + years. They give extra floatation over the 6:00 X 6's. They aren't that much heavier........do cause some noticeable drag.........but are a nice interim step between the 6's and 8's. My guess is that since it's not a popular tire for that many applications you could probably find some? Unless you really need the 8's?

Thanks for the great info and suggestions. I am looking at 7inch as 8s are not available in 4 or 6 ply.

At the risk of asking the obvious, have you called Desser Tire?
