Earthx 337 example? Anyone have one?

The concord battery took a dump in my 140 and I want to start knocking out a bunch of weight where I can. Updating to a lithium battery would definitely help. Earthx offers a TSO battery and have an STC for the 182p, but they don’t have an example 337 for anyone to use and they indicated to me that an STC for the 140 was not in their future.

Has anyone installed one and do you have an example 337 that was submitted and approved? My IA informed me that he wanted to see one done before he would submit one.

Check into the Odyssey battery and specs - this has been done by others as a "minor alteration" with no 337 required. If you search the page, I think you'll find the rationale discussed. FWIW

If the EarthX battery is approved for the 182, I don't see why you couldn't use the same process/logic to install it in the 140 as a minor alteration. It's not a major alteration unless it changes the design of the electrical system.

OTOH, anything that shifts the CG forward is going to slow you down! ;)

There is few EarthX batteries that got overheating issues...
It might be a good idea to install a BMS with an over-voltage protection

Just to close the loop, I ended up going the route of getting the Odyssey battery and installing it. I think at the pricepoint, its not quite where I want to be and the hassle of convincing my mechanic lost its glamor.

Did you utilize the original battery box? ...any challenges with fitting and securing the Odyssey? Can you post a photo or two of the final installation? Thanks!

I utilized the old battery box and pinned it in place with some 2x4s as that is how the old one was put in place. Will update battery box in the future when I get a better grip on future upgrades.

I did this last year. Removed the entire battery box but left the ‘base’of it by drilling out the rivets holding the sides on. Then bought the Odyssey box which is 3 sided. Installed the battery on its side with the new box mounted to the existing box. This gave a firm factory installed mounting point for the new battery. Now the new box must be removed by removing 6 screws to change the battery. Terminals face forward instead of up. Installed the charger connection with a pigtail into the baggage compartment so I can easily hook up the odyssey maintainer/charger. Saved almost 2 lbs by removing the box and wood spacers. Also a lot cleaner and neat. Don’t know how to post pics but happy to send them. I used a 337 but my mechanic didn’t even blink when he signed off on everything and felt it was unnecessary. Thought the 337 would be better for resale issues - it’s all documented.
