Summer lower cowl lip 0452199

Does anyone have a picture or even know where I could find one of these?

My new cylinders are taking quite a bit of time to settle down and run rather hot. Even though I have the early lower cowl that has a low profile (a little extra air draw) I'd like to explore a little extra cooling for my take-offs. I get a little nervous hitting 400F without much effort. General baffling is in great shape with no leaks. I do have the inter-cylinder baffles.

David:
Nothing fancy about the strip - you can easily DIY out of a piece of AL. IIIRC John C. has answered that question before here. Suggest you do a search here, if you haven't already done so. However, if John C or others don't jump in with the measurements, I'll measure mine and give a description. I just can't swear that mine is OEM but I do know the last 61 year history but "Bubba" was around before that! :)

There are three different shapes of lower cowlings, so one diagram may or may not fit yours.

Randy,

I know there are different lower shapes, I thought there were only 2. Here's what I have, supposedly early 1946, been on it's nose at least once I'm sure in the past. If had a pattern I might try my hand at making one but I'm not really a sheet metal guy.

Edd,

A search on 'summer' or '0452199' comes up with nothing on the forum, probably was on the old website before the crash.

I snapped this picture today of a 120 cowling with the cooling lip installed. If memory serves, the lip lowers oil temp on this particular plane by about 10 degrees. It extends about an inch below the cowling at roughly a 60 degree angle.

That gives me something to play with, I'll size it up during my oil change this afternoon, thanks!

What exactly am I looking for in the old forum?

Actually, you were going to sell me a spare one that you had laying around ;)

OK, maybe you didn't understand my question, or maybe you weren't even answering my question, or maybe you were joking. Anyway, I didn't understand your response.

If there was something from the old forum you could see today, what would it be? There is (was) a thread called "Cowling Bottom Lip". I can copy it if that's what you meant...

I think Edd thought there was an old thread on the subject. I wouldn't mind seeing it. I on the other hand was just joking about you having the part......

I'm not very good on making compound curves although I have plenty of .035 to work with.
