Fuel Selector Valve
Years ago, I replace my fuel selector valve (Left, Right, Off) with an Allen 6S122 valve. It has worked flawlessly for many years. I decided to rebuild it even though it was working great. It takes 4 O-Rings, two MS29513-114 and two M83248/1-011. The valve came apart easily and went back together easier. BTW, the valve is for sale for around $200. You'll have to find a handle that works. The valve is used in many different aircraft but works great in Cessna 120/140 with the LEFT-RIGHT-OFF. I have a complete list of part numbers for the valve including the retaining rings, ball bearings used in the detents, etc. If any needs the list let me know.

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
I meant to say the valve sells at most supply firms for around $200.

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
Ray,
Would you have a pic of the disassembled Allen valve or a schematic I could add to my files?

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
Should have taken some pics. Very simple valve. All metal, symetrical plug, large O rings top and bottom. Oval shaped slots in the plug that take the two smaller O rings. Four spring loaded ball bearings fit into holes form the positive detents.

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
That is originally a Piper fuel valve, what are the legalities of putting it in a Cessna?
I would be rather hesitant without having a proper flight manual supplement unless the handle operates the same as the flight manual suggests (i.e. handle is the pointer).

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
I bought the handle separately. It's exactly the same handle as the Cessna 120/140 fuel selector valve offered for sale by AC Spruce for over $500.

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
Also, there's this "replacement" valve (below) -- inexpensive ($32.95), exact fit, bullet-proof durable and functions flawlessly for L/R/Off. The Imperial handle easily retrofits to the 6749 stem or the included handle is simple to modify for "pointing" properly. There are some among the fleet quietly aviating with it...for many years. As Si mentions, "the legalities of putting it in a Cessna" is an important issue, certainly, and in no way is this an endorsement. The rules surrounding the new "off the shelf parts for vintage aircraft" may still not allow an off-the-shelf valve(??)...or would they? Mac

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
This is the old Weatherhead valve. There are some instructions somewhere on this site on how to cut the shaft down, grind the point off the handle and reverse it so the handle points to the tank selected. I did one for my 140 and it lasted about 6 months before it started sticking and became too hard to turn. I lubed it once and then it happened again shortly thereafte. I gave up and bought the current valve described in this string.

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
As to legality, I think if you check the criteria for "owner produced parts", IIRC, "economics" is one of the criteria. FWIW

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
Seeing as we are on a fuel selector valve discussion I found this by accident, Dakota Cub has a 4-way valve L-Both-R-Off, I am thinking it appears dimensionally equal to the old Imperials. Thought I would post for anyone interested. BTW they have an STC for a bunch of Pipers. May make the paperwork transition a little easier for using in later model birds with the 4-way valves?
