Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil?

Just heard this from a gent, and I wonder if anyone has tried it and found that it works or is it just another old wives tale.

When putting together exhaust riser pipe joints in the muffler system one wraps heavy duty aluminum foil around the joint before installing the clamp. Says that it will eliminate any exhaust leaks and keep the joint tight.

I've never heard of that one, but someone out there is always trying to build a better system or mousetrap. Anyone ever heard of this, and does it work or is it just another old wives tale?

I haven't heard that one, but I have used exhaust fiberglass tape in a few instances, as it heats up it makes a nice bond.

I used fiberglass header wrap. Soak it in water and wrap. Let it dry and it will be solid. I use it in chafe areas and joints.

I have used 0.005 thick stainless steel shim stock cut to the width of the clamp. Seems to work well and is reusable for several removals during annuals.
