Rating an engine

So in my quest to own one these contraptions one in depth topic id like to get input on is rating an engine, specifically before even getting serious about going to look states away and before a prebuy even. Kind of in the weeding ones out of the ads to narrow the list.

Ive been reading and getting input from knowledgable friends and im understanding low time isnt only thing to look for, but factor in chronological time from rebuild, hanger time, etc... but how does one put the moving parts together. As the ads arent full of 5 year old rebuilds with 500 hours on em... whats there will seem better in one area and worse in another... such as not enough use or enough use but been a long time since so getting up there in hours...

What are your thoughts such as newer overhaul but less hours per year since vs older overhaul but more hours per year but getting thefe in hours if its not gunna make it past tbo? what do you look for in reveiwing log books, red flags? Good signs? Etc? What engine model do you prefer and why? What should i be looking for in terms of time on the top end?

I guess im asking your engine theology if you were currently a new buyer... Please :) :)
