Axle bolts

Looking at the Cessna parts book they call out NAS144 bolts which us what is installed on my aircraft currently. I want to replace the hardware when I change to the Grove axles. Spruce lists AN4 hardware in their "kit". Does anyone know a good source for NAS144 bolts? I've seen lots of AN bolts on axles but I want the correct hardware. Thanks

You definitely don't want to use AN4- bolts as they are of a different measure of strength.

Make sure you know the actual diameter that you need - as above, John C will check in and I think he sells them - look for his link on one of his responses "Skyport East" and he may have them listed there.

Thanks for the info. Mine are .250 diameter not sure on length but there are 2 shims on each side.

Would anyone have reservations about using the bolts I have? Not planning on it but just curious on opinions

I suggest unless you already know the exact thickness of the Grove "flange", you wait to check the exact length you'll need. NAS bolts are close tolerance bolts, so pricey.
I won't touch your question but I've never heard of any wrecks due to the 4 high strength, close tolerance bolts failing - inspect for corrosion, etc.

Many, many years ago when I was at Cape Canaveral, an older NASA friend who had just learned to fly a 170, asked me to go with him on a short flight to a grass strip. I was very uneasy an on landing I could see problems and started to take the controls away from him but was reluctant so a violent ground loop evolved - wiped out the gear. Fortunately or unfortunately, for him, an axle broke so the FAA listed that as the cause of the ground loop but I knew differently. Point being, no bolt failures. 2C

The Grove flange os the same thickness as the original but I don't know the length of the bolts and didn't want to take it down just to measure them. I'd like to put new bolts in there not worried about the price. I guess I could NDI the existing bolts or wait until I pull it apart to order. I might just wait until the annual to change them. I don't need to put them on now I just wanted to swap them out when I put the 8.50s on.

Just checked on Groves site. They list AN bolts for use with their axles too. I wonder why they would recommend anything other than the NAS bolts? Oh well
