1946 Cowl Latch Repairs/Parts

The innards of our cowl latches are badly rusted and one of them is broken. Does anyone know of a source for those interior parts that were made of steel, or a whole replacement latch? I found that there is an STC for installation of “W. D. Davis V.I.C.C.L” latches but the website link is broken. Any information appreciated. I would just as soon not have to try and fabricate those parts.

Univair carries enough parts to build a complete latch. https://www.univair.com/search.php?sear ... ch&Search=

Try this link: http://www.cowllatchstc.com/ for the alternative.

Isn't the Dip Davis STC the one that the Morris (Lorraine) purchased and are selling under their ad? Dip was a great guy!

Well as usual you forum members have come through with good info. I am embarrassed to say I had not checked Univair for these parts before sending my initial question. It is amazing that they have all the little individual parts.

Also, when I did my first searching for the Dip Davis STC the link came up with an error. Now it is working again and I am happy to see there is an alternative to the original latches.

Now to make the decision - which way to go.

Anyway, thanks to all who responded!

You're welcome John,

Personally if I were you, I would make an evaluation of all of the existing latches to determine what is actually needed. If you need only a few parts, check the prices at Univair, you may be able to get by more economically by ordering those to make the originals safe and functional. On the other hand if you need the entire assembly, the Dip Davis STC from Ken & Loraine would be the more economical choice. If you're looking at originality and don't mind the cost then Univair would be the choice.
Just my 2 cents.

A quick google brings me to here:

https://taildraggeraviation.com/stc-cow ... -stc-home/

Not sure if it's the same people. I was looking at this myself after I broke a latch a couple weeks ago; I think I'll make the jump to the STC'd latches at annual.

Taildragger Aviation are members of the Association. They acquired the STC from Dip a while back.
