Air filter/Carb heat box

I got another one. As long as I can recall, taken with a grain of salt, my air filter has been a skew from the cowling. I really notice it lately when changing the element. I’m a little OCD and like things lined up but looked at another 140 yesterday and saw a similar mis alignment. It’s cocked to the passenger side a bit. I thought I’d check with you all to see if it is normal or a co incidence between 2 140s.

Thanks

When I tighten down the cowling screws against the firewall I nudge/adjust the cowling to taste (components latched together, screws in but not tight). I noticed early on in my ownership that the cowling seemed to rest on the airbox and the above solution was passed along to me from the forum.

My friends 140 was doing this also. It was starting to chafe into the side of Brackett air filter housing. New engine mount bushings trued the filter up with the cowl

Looking at the photo, I'm thinking that filter is sticking out too far. IIRC, on mine the top edge of the filter is behind the lip of the cowl. I have a '46 cowl. Plus, it looks like it's aimed off to the right of the plane. Is the air box parallel to the center line of the engine, and that parallel to the longitudinal axis of the plane?

From just eyeballing it, no it is not parallel to the center line. I assumed it was repaired at one point and the flange that bolts to the carb and the box were not lined up when welded. It was not to noticeable until I had the box overhauled. I’m thinking new box at this point.

As far as bushings go, they are new and all tightened equally. Possible there was a difference compared to the old ones.

I’m going to qualify the alignment statement. I don’t think the filter is parallel to the prop center. That’s why I think the box is cocked to the passenger side.
