Just wondered if anyone has fitted an electronic magneto... Surefly or similar?

interested in feedback positive or negative... Looking to replace Eisemann LA4 on my C85.

I had a friend who was building an experimental with a type certified engine. He too was thinking of going electronic ignition because it was “state of the art” and would be more efficient. I reminded him that he would be strapping this fine built aircraft to his butt and climbing 10 thousand feet into the air. Then we talked about the “What If’s” like an alternator or generator going off line in flight. He would be relying on that great big battery to keep the fan turning. After some thought he decided go with the “old school” and keep the reliable magneto system.

The last I knew the FAA would only allow one electronic ignition system on a certified aircraft.

When it comes time to do something with a magneto on my aircraft, I have every intention of replacing it with an electronic ignition system.

We have been running with electronic ignition in our cars for years and how often do you have problems?
Very rarely.
With todays batteries one would last plenty long to get you on the ground safely if your alternator should fail.

With the improved starting, better ignition, improved fuel efficiency, and extended service life, I feel the advantages out weigh the the disadvantages.

My two cents,

Rick

If I had to replace a mag I’d consider an EI STC.
I don’t know if it would be cost effective for my 120. $3,000 for the electroair vs $700 rebuilt.
Some plane it would make a lot of sense.
