WANTED - Pants Mounting Plates

Post by juliogdiana »

Hello guys,

I got my hands on a nice genuine aluminum set of 120/140 pants for my 1946 C120, however it didnt have the mounting plates.
I put a add on Facebook looking for a mounting plates and I bought two sets from a guys in States, however I dont think they are the right ones, they are flat and the holes doesnt match my pants, I tried to contact the member who does the carbon fiber mounting plates but his e-mail isnt working.
I can see that the carbon fiber ones are not flat and have a bit of shape on them, I think it is the one I need, could you guys could give any advice about if I can a buy a set of mounting plates or just change the holes on my existing flat plates.

Thanks in advance.

The plates for the original pants are not flat. Also, they are as rare as hen's teeth... I've often thought of making a set of dies to press them, but I think they would need to be tempered after.

I don’t think need to be tempered, do you think if I change the holes on flat plate I can make it to work?

I'm not sure how to answer that. I will say this: the plane of the axle mounting surface and the plane of the inner face of the wheel pant are not the same. There is some offset, and I believe they are not parallel.

You have the major key items- do an eyeball mock-up and if looks feasible, using what you already have, use clay ( silly putty) with a release agent and form a basic shim that's used to make a final shim. The final shim could be affixed to the pant providing the required contour adjustment. Just an out-of-the-box thought. 2C

I looked at one a while back. It was pretty beat up, but I decided that to press one I'd need to use -O (soft) aluminum. I think it would have to be at least T3 to stand up.

I think O material would hold up, if it were thick enough, I don’t think there is much stress.
O material is almost butter soft, it’s so soft it will smear onto a drill bit like melted plastic when you drill it.
I have the original pants, and I thought the plates were flat, but it’s been 12 years or so since Installed them so not sure, there isn’t much of a bend is there?
Depending on the press and bend radius you can form T3

Are they off the plane? Can you get some pics of the plates?

No, I put them on 12 years ago and haven’t removed them since. I believe they don’t remove easily?
