Trim cable replacement

Post by 7698 »

Im in the process of replacing the trim cables and have come to the chain sections and I dont know how to proceed.

I was expecting some form of clip or pin to attach the cable to the chain, but it appears to be some form of rivet. It doesnt mention anything in the manual so Im looking for some guidance on methods of attachment.

How have folk dealt with this?

You need a chain breaker to remove the rivet and a riveter to reinstall it. It's a #25 chain. A bicycle shop can probably do it for you.

(Your chain looks a little stiff to me...)

Yes its a bit stiff... Crud and stuff. A good wash required.

It would probably work fine. Whether it's approved is questionable. Usually you orient the clip based on the direction the chain drives. These chains move both directions, so that may be why they're riveted.

Why do you need to take it apart? You can pick up a tool to remove and reset the rivets for less than $20 US.

Replacing cables whilst the tail is off. No idea how long theyve been on... A few sharp bits when you drag a cloth etc.

Tail off to replace lower elevator cable.

The clips are McFarlane, so assuming they are for their #25 chain

I replaced the trim cables on mine and do not recall taking the chain apart.
I attached safety wire to the cable and pulled the cable out. Then I used the safety wire to pull the new cable in.

I took the trim wheel loose to get the chain off and on.
Same with the actuator in the elevator.

Not hard to do over all, but it took a little brain power to figure out how to set the up and down stops.

Not sure how this can be done without dealing with the chains, unless there is a kit or something that has them attached already?

The trim stops are interesting to deal with. Trying to get the bushes out to allow the new cable through was a challenge, so we've spent all day down the fuz, but they are now back in...

Ive fitted the rear two cables as they are the most difficult to get to access wise... Looking at the handbook it says a tension of 30lbs, but that seems very high for the size of cable... is this correct?

30lbs is what the book call for and that is what I did.
Was ok for me.
