Rudder Pedal Bearings

Hi All,

I just replaced the 4 rudder pedal bearings, as I found one pedal was pretty sloppy. The bearings, which appeared to be original were magnesium and one of the holes was oblong causing the play. I found the tailwheel steering springs to be very tight when I bought the bird, I suspect this contributed.

I searched this forum and found very little but fortunately there are several topics on the Cessna 170 forum. Here's what I figured out:

There are two types of bearings 0411264 which clamps 2 torque tubes and 0411263 which clamps 1 torque tube. They are sold by the half, so you need 4 x 0411264 and 4 x 0411263 to do them all. They are made of plastic now and the new part number is S16474-1 & S16475-1. They are held in place by AN3 bolts, I ordered longer bolts on a suggestion that the new plastic bearings had slightly taller dimensions. AN3-16A worked well.

The bearings are a bit strange, the 0411264 that clamps two torque tubes has different sized holes however the torque tubes are the same size. It took me a while to figure out that this is as per design, and that the large hole is not meant to contact the torque tube. I suspect this is because having 3 bearings would make alignment an issue. I could not find any info from Cessna on which orientation is correct. I installed the same way as removed. I did this job years ago. I don't remember any specifics, except that I had to glue some nuts to my finger tips, but I'm certain the bearings fit everything correctly; my inner OCD would not have accepted anything less!

Glueing nuts to finger tips eh, I used tape. Its not an easy job and requires some flexibility.

Seems odd, the image above is from a 170.

It's a bit frustrating as the double bearing could be installed big hole forward on either side. I can't find anywhere in the parts manual where it is specified. Mine is the same as the picture, the small hole is on the tube with the retaining ridge.
