Instrument restoration

Post by rwill234 »

I have a few instruments that I would like to have restored while I have the plane down doing other repairs and building a new panel. I believe the ASI to be original and although the tach was changed it was early in the life of the plane. Any recommendations?

You're probably going to hear quite a few suggestions pertaining to instrument restoration. Here's a company that has performed instrument restoration and work in the past for several folks I know.

Here's another. Their work is better than their web site...

Caution, many older aircraft instruments have radioactive, glow in the dark, paint on the pointer and markings. Getting an instrument repair shop to deal with that can be expensive.

Good point, if I’m not mistaken instrument repair shops will refuse to work on instruments with radium dials (radioactive). Recently a student of mine had to purchase a new altimeter for his airplane because his old unit had radium.

These folks restored an old war surplus Bulova sensitive altimeter for me, good turn around, good price. They seem to do well with the old stuff.
