Glue Removal Help

Hey guys,

We're starting our restoration project on our 140. Trying to get a lot of the carpet and headliner glue off with MEK, it's done the trick for most of it, but still stuck with some of these orange patches on the celling? Has anyone had any luck with getting all of it off, or is it a get as much off as you can type of thing before you primer it?

Purely a suggestion, and I don't know if this will work, but what about trying a biodegradable water soluble paint stripper such as Citristrip?

Assuning, , you are going to repace headliner, et al and I don't think you'll find any corrosion under any of the OEM glue - "Bubba" just cleaned the total exposed surfaces, passivated, paint/zinc chromate and left as is. Not likely to start corroding after 7X years. 4c

If you really want to remove it, I've used products from "Goof Off" and "Goo Gone", and also "Brakleen" successfully. It's just a matter of finding the one that works best for that adhesive.

I used the Citrus strip from Lowe’s with a plastic scraper and it worked well on both the glue and that horrible black stuff. Followed up with scotch brute and a little lacquer thinner.

Somewhat off thread but during the restoration, suggest you inspect the inside of the front and rear spar carry- thrus, clean, and preserve with something like ACF 50,etc. It's easy, now, to remove their wing attach fittings, plus a borescope helps. Some of these develop corrosion over the years. I think it was the Luscombes that judiously cut onspection holes in the top skin to inspect without having to remove wings.

Also, if you are considering 4point shoulder harnesses, easy to attach "attach points" at two locations on the rear spar carry-thru now. Years ago, Cessna offered a mod kit to do this complete with hardware and instructions , but probably not now. One could contact Cessna Tech Support and see if they have the info in their archives,
and if so, try to get a copy of the installation instructions. IIRC only 2 pieces of simple hardware like nut plates. This would permit one to duplicate and install with only a logbook entry, citing the OEM info.

Thank you all so much! Really appreciate the help, once I left the Citri strip on covered overnight a good chunk of it came off. Probably going to have to repeat the process a couple more times but it's nice to see progress.

That looks great with the primer on it, very nice work! We're torn between the green primer and the grey, I think I prefer the green.

The info about the 4point harness is super helpful as well. That was our plan just haven't spent much time digging into it yet, I'll reach out to Cessna for some info. That would be great if they still have it.

Put the stripper on then cover it with saran wrap to keep it from drying out.
