Something "new" has shown up. I just received pictures from a member with gear leg cracks. However, not the "cracks we're used to seeing!".
These cracks run lengthwise on the fore and aft sides of the gear leg, right in the center. This is at the bend where the axles attach.
The "cracks" are about .020 deep, maybe a tad less. They are very uniform and to the un-trained eye would suggest something from manufacture.
Gear legs are bent, heat treated and then shot peened. As best we (the member/owner) and I can tell, these "cracks" sure look like something that came straight from manufacture and have probably been this way for a long time.
Check your gear for this situation and if anyone has any input, we're "open for discussion".
