For an update to the rivets...
I called Cessna and they looked at the original drawings for the plane...the rivets are listed as AN470AD3. (402 of them to attach the fuselage splice plates.) There was no information concerning the larger sized rivet head that's actually installed on the planes. Structurally, apparently AD3 rivet is sufficient.
To bad the guys that were bucking rivets in our planes at the factory are long gone...they'd have all the answers!
So, I'll either use the AN455AD3 or the AN470AD3. Or, the AN470AD4 if my IA tells me to!!!!

Re: C140A Fuselage Splice Plate Rivets
One more note...it seemed like the folks at Cessna really enjoyed researching the archives for the rivet information.
The lady that called back kept calling my 140 "your little airplane"...
I was afraid they would tell me they wouldn't be able to get that information. They called back in about 2 hours. Really nice folks. Some of the options available to pick from on the phone menu were..."If your plane is a Citation press 1, if it is a turboprop press 2..." We fall into the lowly "piston engine" group!

Re: C140A Fuselage Splice Plate Rivets
Rule of thumb is to use rivets with a shank diameter about 3 times the thickness of the thickest plate in the joint. For an AN470AD3 rivet that would be about 1/32" or .032".

According to AC43.13-1B it is OK to replace AN-455, Brazier head (original) rivets with AN-470 Universal head rivets, as long as they are the same size and strength.
Personally I would go with the 3.
