I got my Tailbeacon a few days ago. Looks really sweet!
Only issue though is that my A&P said that the Greater Chicago FSDO is not authorizing any field approvals (337’s) for this unit. It seems odd that this would be the case. Anybody hear anything about this and/or start the approval process?

It looks like you should not require a field approval at all according to the document found here and you can leverage the STC AML that lists the 172 even if it doesn't specifically list the 120/140. The guidance says the 337 goes straight to OKC.

What he said. Have your IA read the document linked to above. It states how to fill out the paperwork and where to send it. Approval is automatic as long as there are no structural modifications.
Here's the meat:
"Submit a FAA Form 337 to document ADS-B OUT alterations. On Form 337, Block 8, include
the following compliance statement, "The installed ADS-B OUT system was shown to meet the
equipment performance requirements of 14 CFR section 91.227" along with the applicable ADS-B OUT
transmitter and GPS make/model information. Submit the completed Form 337 to the
Aircraft Registration Branch, AFS-750, P.O. Box 25504, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73125. The
Form 337 can be submitted directly without FAA approval in Block 3."

So, my A&P/IA is coming today for my annual. If we mount the tail beacon, he can’t do the ground check (at least I don’t think) so he makes the logbook entry for installation and I need to take the plane to an avionics shop and the avionics shop completes the 337 after successfully testing the unit. Is that right?

I don't think you necessarily need an avionics shop. All you need is radar coverage to trigger an interrogation.

You can also download their installation manual. The only testing you need to do prior to the test flight, besides verifying the configuration information, can be done wherever you can get the transponder to reply to an interrogation. That can be either RADAR or a test set.
