Tail beacon
So I am looking to order my tail beacon and Spruce lists the same part one for "Certified" and one for "Experimental" What is the difference (bedsides) the $300 price? Since it isn't approved for 120/140 can you buy the experimental on?

ADS-B is one of the pieces of avionics listed as required to be TSO'd per part 91. You'll need the certified version.

So I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted here, but I just don't understand the logic of certain TSO'd avionics. I can built my own airplane, install just about anything I want including the avionics and fly into and out of any airspace ( at least in Canada) and all's good. But take a factory manufactured and certified airplane and try and put a non TSO'd radio in it and somehow it is unsafe? I would understand if these TSO requirements were for commercially operated aircraft with the flying public riding in them, but a private guy in a 1946 C140 needs something TSO'd when a high performance homebuilt does not? Common sense is just not that common....

You don’t need a TSO’d radio if you’re flying part 91. The only items that need to meet TSO are:8474 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 4:35 pm So I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted here, but I just don't understand the logic of certain TSO'd avionics. 1) Transponder
2) Altitude Encoder
3) ADS-B

Re: Tail beacon
Ok, but still wheres the logic that an RV10 can fly into controlled airspace with a non TSO'd ADS-B, but a C140 can't?

Re: Tail beacon
Where's the logic that an Icon A5 can be in the light sport category but a Cessna 140 cannot? Yes I know what they say about that, but Blaine, methinks it's not about logic but about alternate realities and myths and lobbying which can be splained only in the bowels of someone's office in OKC.

Yes John, I tried to ask this question of a couple Transport Canada ( our FAA) inspectors and they couldn't come up with a valid reason either.
