Yoke Mounted PTT Switches

I put a simple momentary switch on the panel, happened to be a starter switch for an R-1340, but any switch will do.
It’s not difficult to push a button, remember back in the day they had to remove a Mic from its clip and hold it to their mouth to speak, so a button on the dash is no issue.

If someone were to drill the tube, just be sure to debur the hole, almost certain our C-210’s tube was drilled and several wires were run through it. A C-210 is much heavier on the controls than a 140.

Here is an option, use an adel clamp and sandwich the clamp around the yoke with the ptt. Use Tefzel wire 3 in 1 or similar and feed it through the yoke tube with a small hole drilled on the back side, the front side is open behind cover. Must be careful that wire does not interfere with other things with control yoke movement, it is doable by owner but you may get an a/p involved for safety reasons. Works good with less wire clutter.

My son's C180 has the PTT switch about an inch above the throttle. It's a really good place to have it...works whether flying from the left or right seat. The only thing that keeps me from doing that is having to drill in the plastic trim piece. I don't want to crack it. I have a couple of plexiglas bits, but not sure if they are the right size.

If I decide I'd like to drill the shaft, I'll talk to my IA for advice, since he'd be the one to sign it off. The Adel clamp looks nice.

A step drill works well in plexiglass. "One size fits all".

Thanks, John, for the suggestion. I have a step drill, but would have never considered using it on plexiglas. I've got some scrap pieces, so I'll give it a try.

Use the plexi drill to make a pilot hole as sometimes the step drill is harder to center. Then, enlarge the hole as necessary with the step drill.

I just made a little loop out of aluminum and ran the wire through the yoke. A little heat shrink and some rubber grommets added a nice touch.
