Savvy Aviation - Oil Filter Adapters

Post by 7896 »

FYI. Mike Busch recently published an article that may affect many of us who fly behind Continental engines.

My engine has the Cessna adapter and I have not seen any evidence of movement, but I'll be watching it a little closer now.

Fortunately, the design of the C-series lubrication system and the STC'd F&M oil filter adapter does lend itself to this sort of failure.

John,

Did you mean to say "doesn't lend itself to this sort of failure."? Because the C series adaptors don't rely on a single bolt like the larger engine adaptors do.

No crush washers to compress and not twisting forces to unscrew anything.

There has been an AD on the Cessna type oil filter adapters for at least 2 decades on big bore continental engines which entailed checking torque on the big lock nut, this looks to be a better design with the bolt on top and apparently people are still not getting it right. AD's shouldn't be mandated on the fleet because of a lack of following instructions or owners unknowingly getting in trouble from straying beyond the confines of simple preventative maint. without over site. Most of the small Cont.'s use the old El Reno type adapters and have been stone simple and trouble free for a long time , I'll stick with my 140 :) Ok I'm stepping off my soapbox.
