I’ve wondered how much weight metalizing the wings actually adds, if the drag brace wires are removed. It may not be as much as you think.
Personally as long as I make the trees at the end of the runway is all I care about. It’s not as if I’m pulling limits loads on anything.

Just re-weighed my 1949 140A after finishing with its 2 year face lift. I installed a new Airtex interior with original seats recovered in leather, changed to 150 exhaust, added a COM and Transponder, switched to all LED nav lights and landing lights, changed to breakers from fuses. Stripped a bunch of old useless wire. Still has the OEM starter and Gen, a Scott 3200 and an 0-200. Stripped and polished it down to bare aluminum and had the leading edges and cowl and 2 stripes down the side close to the original design done with vinyl wrap.

I'm at 992 lbs empty. So with a 1500 lb gross that leaves me with 508 lbs, or about 355 lbs with full fuel. I'm ok with that.

Good morning all - I just weighed my plane on certified scales. 1946 140, fully painted with C85 and Razorback wings.

The weight penalties: Baby Bushwheel 3200 tail wheel, Heavy NARCO com and transponder, 2 place intercom, original Grimes landing light, strobe and full lighting, still has the speaker, full interior minus baggage carpet, full VFR panel with electric TC but no other gyros, added sub panel of 6 breaker switches in addition to original 6 fuses. No Nav equipment. No hat shelf. No wheel extenders and stock tires. Cleveland wheels and brakes. C150 exhaust. New lap belts.

The lightening efforts: New Odyssey battery, lightweight alternator, removed original battery box and replaced with Odyssey box, replaced most wiring forward of the panel and all FWF. Removed baggage carpet but left all other Airtex interior.

Weight (accidentally) included my iPad ram mount, Dynon D3 mount and Battery Tender. Came in at exactly 950 lbs, so figure 948 (or so) without the extras listed above.

I figure a lightweight starter, removing speaker, cutting back on the interior and replacing the com, intercom and transponder with a Garmin 327 (or Stratus) and a Garmin GTR200 could easily lose another 15-20lbs so I would not be shocked at a 930-940 lb plane if the owner was really frugal. An unpainted plane would save several pounds too.

Now, I plan to reinstall the child seat, add shoulder harnesses, add headphone jacks behind the seat, and install leather seat covers. This will probably offset my LW starter but I think I can keep it around 950 without a whole lot of effort unless I add nav equipment (which is NOT currently in the plan).
