I don't think the aluminum would hold up too well. Also, note on the ebay part, the two pieces of steel are spot welded together.

You only need to drill through the head of the rivet. No danger to the tank.

Yes, I agree. Just quickly fabed it up to see what it looked like, here is the quick and dirty version. I used a rivet to hold it together so I think I could do the same with steel. I'm going to make up a wood stop and drill those heads off, thanks for that tip.

That unit is not for a Cessna 140A, I've seen it used on later model 172's.

Looks very nice. You might also check the fastener at the top of door area. Those wear also.

Drilled it out today using John's redneck drill stop, no issues, came out clean. Still working on fabricating a new one, bought some 16 gage sheet and riveting it together worked fine but that gage was too heavy, I will try and make one up with 22 gage to see how it goes.

Finally got around to making that stop today. Used 22 gage sheet steel and that worked out just right. Went on with no issues and works as good as the factory version.
