The B&C alternator is a good product. I just hope that the reason you couldn't get the generator to work won't still be there when you're finished with the conversion!

Ha, I hope so too. But, this is a new alternator, voltage regulator and I'll be changing the battery and a lot of the wiring, so I hope I have all my bases covered!

I always feel better if I understand the problem before I apply the fix.

Agreed, which is why I chased this around so long. At the end of the day it appeared like both the generator and voltage regulator had issues after heating up. Short of some massive undiagnosed current leak somewhere I'm hoping replacing most of the system/wiring will take care of it. I do plan to have the genny bench tested afterwards to see if I can get a more definitive answer.

Re: O-290-D Alternator Conversion
I was wondering what my battery life would be in an emergency and did a little calculation of draw on the battery. Generally - once the engine is started - our little beasts don't have huge amounts of power hungry kit. I think that most have perhaps ( if the IPAD / Tablet ) is not connected to the battery something like this - although I am no electrical bod so I may be barking up the wrong tree...
But what ever is the correct answer even with most of the kit on I think am drawing quite a lot less than I thought I was. Certainly enough less to mean that I would have more than enough juice to wait 20 -30 mins at less than the 1000rpm my generator needs to start charging.

Unfortunately I didn't do as good of job verifying the kit contents before we started. B&C sent us the wrong mounting bracket. However it was close enough to let us test fit and start the wiring. Nothing but good things to say about B&C customer service, they overnighted me the correct bracket an hour before their last UPS pickup Friday afternoon.
Got the bracket on Saturday morning and got it installed, it's a perfect fit with the Sky-Tec starter. My A&P has a little more re-wiring behind the panel to get everything cleaned up, I'm hoping to be airborne again by the weekend! After being grounded for over 2 months this is very exciting for me.

Good looking install. Wish I could work out on the ramp.........(well you can, if you're a Polar bear and insulated)

Re: O-290-D Alternator Conversion
Thanks! It turned out great and I'm getting a rock solid voltage at full load at idle!
I feel your pain, I grew up in Kalamazoo, but don't be fooled by the sun, it gets pretty windy out here, makes working outside difficult. I would kill for a hangar!
