LED Navigation lights

Post by n9418a »

Hi folks!
I'm a newbie here, having just purchased a beautiful 1949 140A, and have have an easy question regarding upgrading the navigation bulbs to LEDs.
Specifically, what are the specs for the bulbs . . . base type especially.

I have a feeling this question is very common; if so, can someone direct me to the thread(s) where this is discussed?

Thank you all so much!

I just (like, tonight) swapped my bulbs out for LED's. I went with Whelen colored position lights for the wingtips (https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... kkey=14095) and the PSA bulb for the tail (https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... cement.php).

They look great and are super bright.

If you're looking for an automotive equivalent, you won't find one, at least not for the wing tips. Those bulbs have a built in reflector and are pretty unique.

I bought the colored aero-lites, left the colored glass on the lights, and am very pleased with brightness and color tone. The clear glass with colored bulbs is the wrong color on the green. I didn’t try the white lights with colored glass...

They were reasonably priced and VERY bright. Plus I can’t even detect their draw on my 70 year old volt meter.

I left my colored lenses in as well although the NavMax are supposed to be the correct colors and they have posted the color specs at one time on their site.

The base type you need is BAY15S. The Nav light index pins on the base are offset in the vertical, to align the built-in reflector to the rear as mentioned. Many of the new LED replacements don't use the reflector, but you'll still need the BAY15S style base. I bought white LEDs from these folks and kept my colored lens. https://www.pilotlights.net/catalog/27 Have been very happy with them.
