Metalized back to fabric

Post by 6681 »

Returning my 1948 120 metalized wing back to fabric. Is there an approved method to retain the metal cover over the fuel tanks? Field approval, STC, etc. etc.

No...........not that I'm aware of...........unfortunately.

If you're in process and can work out some Field Approval with your IA, do it.

To do it right you would have to reinforce the rib just outboard of the tank as it is not designed to take the strain of shrinking fabric as the inboard one is.

My question is, why bother? Seems like a lot of work to save 20 pounds. You could save that much weight by installing an Odyssey battery, and a lightweight starter.

I have converted several back to fabric and the weight saving I got was more like 80 lbs.
