For future readers who land on this thread:
Open your Private messages and choose the folder (Inbox, Outbox, Sent messages) you want to delete from. Click on the check box at the right of each header of a message you want to delete, or, at the bottom of the list click on "Mark All". (You can then "unmark" the few you want to keep.)
Click on the "v" in the box that says "Mark/Unmark as important v". Choose "Delete marked" and click "Go"
