shoulder harness

Post by 8175 »

I would like to install a diagonal shoulder harness in my 140A. I have seen one installed in a 140 but not a 140A. At this time, I do not want to take headliner out if I can help it, but rather anchor it in the vertical door jam (PN 0411121). Has anyone done this? I tried to search for prior posts and couldn't find anything. I'd appreciate any information/data. Thanks!

Hi Larry... I don't have a direct answer for you, however I am going to share a few comments:

First, do you know Ken & Lorraine Morris? These great people have restored several 140A's and would likely know the answer to your question. In addition to their experience and knowledge of the 140 Cessna line they happen to be some of the most helpful and thoughtful folks you might ever meet (and BTW, they fly the EAA B-17 - rough job!). Anyway here is a link to their website: http://www.taildraggeraviation.com/index.html

Second, at last year's annual convention I had the privilege of hitching a ride in a 140A from one of the offsite venues back to Newton, KS. I have a vague recollection that this plane had a shoulder strap as you have described. I will attempt to find the contact info for this owner and send it out to you. In the mean time you might get an answer to your question from some other members.

We will sure miss you at the upcoming Fly-In, but hoping you have a great family visit... Rob

The FAA's policy on retrofitting shoulder harnesses has gotten a lot more lax in the last decade or so. See their policy here:
https://www.faa.gov/aircraft/gen_av/har ... policy.pdf

AC43.13-2B has a chapter (chapter 9) on shoulder harness installation and constitutes approved data for our aircraft.

Thanks John, Do you know of how/where the harness is attached to the fuselage in an over the shoulder type harness?

So, since the SAE is given as an acceptable certification body does that mean we could retrofit a seat belt assembly from an automotive application such as one with a lap belt and single diagonal shoulder belt combo? Seems like even that would be preferred to the lap belt alone. Thoughts?

Larry,

I have retractable diagonal shoulder harnesses installed. They bolt to the aft side of the door jam. I'll get a picture for you today.
