Eight people were on board a U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress that crashed in Southern California on Monday, and it is unlikely that any survived.

“Initial indications are that the crash was not survivable,” Edwards Air Force Base said in an update Monday afternoon.

First responders remain at the scene, and officials are “working to account for all personnel.”

The Air Force has not released the names of those killed.

The B-52 went down shortly after takeoff from Edwards around 11:20 a.m. PST. Base leaders said the aircraft was on a “routine test mission.”

The airfield at the base is closed for the time being, and all inbound aircraft are being diverted.

Footage of the crash site captured via helicopter by KTTV showed a long stretch of burnt ground with no recognizable parts of the aircraft intact.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and unit members at this time,” Edwards Air Force Base said.
