Authorities in Alaska are investigating the crash of a chartered aircraft in a remote part of the state that killed all eight people on board.
The aircraft, a Cessna 441, was chartered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for travel to Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport, approximately 450 miles west of Anchorage. The twin-engine Cessna had two pilots and was carrying six passengers. The military described the aircraft as a “civilian contracted aircraft.”
The crash happened at approximately 12:15 p.m. According to preliminary information, it was foggy at the time of the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA are investigating.
The names of the deceased have not been released.
According to the military, the radar site, managed by the Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center, is part of a network of remote radar sites that tracks aircraft operating in Alaska’s airspace and along its borders. The site was established in the 1950s during the Cold War.
