It is increasingly likely that Palm Beach International Airport (KPBI) in Florida will be renamed after President Donald Trump.
State lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday that would change the facility’s name to President Donald J. Trump International Airport.
To take effect, the legislation must be signed into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and approved by the FAA.
DeSantis’ office told the Associated Press on Friday that the governor had not yet received the bill but would “review it in its final form” when he does.
If the governor and the FAA decide to back the name change, it would take effect in July.
The rebranding is expected to cost up to $5.5 million.
Shortly before lawmakers signed off on the proposal last week, the Trump Organization filed a trademark for use of the president’s name on airports, according to the AP. The company is seeking exclusive rights to use the Trump name on airport infrastructure, such as buildings and shuttle buses, and merchandise.
The organization said the Trump family will not charge airports a fee to use its name and is acting only to protect the “most infringed trademark in the world.”
Palm Beach International Airport is located in an unincorporated area of Palm Beach County near West Palm Beach. Historically, the wealthy enclave of Palm Beach has skewed liberal and Democratic, but that has changed as more high-profile supporters of the president relocate there.
Trump owns the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, and the Trump family maintains private quarters on its grounds.
If the Florida bill becomes law, Trump would join the small circle of U.S. presidents with a commercial airport named after them. The club currently includes Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Theodore Roosevelt.
